Response to Arthritis Consumer Experts

Q. If your party is elected to form Manitoba’s next government, what steps will you take to implement tangible solutions to reduce wait times for joint replacement surgery and meet the medically recommended guideline within your mandate?

We will end the crisis in health by investing in supports for families and seniors to ensure they remain healthy at home in the community. We will restore the cut the Pallister PCs made to outpatient physiotherapy and occupational therapy services. By ensuring patients can receive these important services we can ensure better outcomes for patients, reduce re-hospitalizations and reduce the likelihood of further joint replacement surgery. We will also ensure there is adequate staffing in hospital to ensure centres of excellence, like Concordia Hospital, are able to perform the most joint replacement surgeries in a safe fashion. We will make investments in personal care homes so seniors can be supported in appropriate housing while also supporting investments in home care so that seniors can properly age in place. Finally, we will continue to increase the number of joint replacement surgeries conducted in order to address wait times for joint replacement surgery that have risen under the Pallister government. These commitments will help improve health care for Manitobans and will help keep Manitobans healthy and productive in the community.

Hello Cheryl & Anita,

Thank you for your email.

It is very timely because I just had a client with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Devastating and debilitating and she is not able to afford her medication and has to live with the pain. The best thing about her is she has a very strong faith and her positive outlook that she will have better days and will survive.

If the medication is affordable and covered, she would also thrive. We need more drugs on the Compendium that will actually work and that are affordable by the low or fixed income population. For prevention and management, our community needs education, like diet, exercises. And also making these alternative choices affordable and accessible.

Finally, we will continue to increase the number of joint replacement surgeries conducted in order to address wait times for joint replacement surgery that have risen under the Pallister government. These commitments will help improve health care for Manitobans and will help keep Manitobans healthy and productive in the community.

Response:

Good afternoon Cheryl,

First I want to apologize for my delayed response. I was hoping to provide you, the Arthritis Consumer Experts, an official MB NDP response to your excellent questions. Unfortunately due to such a large influx of surveys and short election preparation period an official NDP response was unable to be finished in time.

I do have the MB NDP’s official response to the Arthritis Society of Manitoba’s question. I know you are separate, unrelated organizations but my intention is to relay to you that the MB NDP is listening to all Arthritis advocates wanting to take action to improve the lives of Manitobans living with Arthritis.

We will make investments in personal care homes so seniors can be supported in appropriate housing while also supporting investments in home care so that seniors can properly age in place.

Finally, we will continue to increase the number of joint replacement surgeries conducted in order to address wait times or joint replacement surgery that have risen under the Pallister government. These commitments will help improve healthcare for Manitobans and will help keep Manitobans healthy and productive in the community.”

I do also want to offer my personal response.

For over 13 yrs I have been living with an auto-immune disease diagnosis as well as practicing as a direct care Registered Nurse (in various areas). The last 8.5 years I have been working in Hemodialysis.

I bring with me the unique perspective of someone managing a chronic condition while also caring for vulnerable people. Many of the people I currently serve are dealing with the advancement of osteoarthritis. Many are Indigenous and have added challenges to achieving optimal health outcomes. I see many barriers for my patients. I no longer accept the excuses, this is one of the main reasons I am running to be MLA in Tuxedo.

I also know and connect with people who are living with rheumatoid arthritis while I am receiving treatment along side them. As I am a patient who receives a biologic agent to help manage my condition. My patient journey has taught me much in learning where the system is and is not serving people. It has also opened my eyes to understand the value and need for patient feedback and organizations, such as the Arthritis Consumer Experts, because there are challenges I cannot see from a healthcare provider perspective.

I don’t have detailed answers to each of your questions but I want you to know I will be bringing my personal and professional observations, insights and concerns, as well as those of my Constituents, forward every change I get. Myself and the NDP believe in implementing evidence-based policy, procedures and programs.

As a healthcare provider, I believe strongly in championing improved prevention, treatment and care in the Manitoba Legislature.

A strong and thriving Manitoba is dependent on a healthy population. I want Manitoba to lead the way in innovative solutions to decrease the number of Manitobans diagnosed with Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. As well as have a comprehensive care model that supports Manitobans to live the best quality of life they can and stay in the workforce.

I hope this response gives you confidence in my ability to represent the needs and concerns for Manitobans living with Arthritis to the Manitoba government.

Thank you again for reaching out and providing important data to me.

Respectfully,

Carla
