Thank you for reaching out to my campaign and please see brief responses below:
  1. Our plan to end surgical backlog in Ontario: We will immediately increase funding to hospitals and investment $1 billion to clear the surgical and procedural backlog. We’ll identify and publicize the number of delayed procedures and publish regular progress reports. We will increase hospital capacity by hiring more nurses and creating a healthcare workforce strategy. We’ll expand operating referral room hours over the evenings and weekends. We will create a centralized surgical system to support patients to choose if they would like to stay with their current surgeon, choose a sooner appointment, or one closer to home.
  2. Equitable access to care for all Ontarians: We will make arthritis care available in the community, not just in long-term care settings. We will improve access to recovery and rehabilitation through public and non-profit home and community care support services to alleviate pressure on hospitals. Increased funding for home and community care will help people stay in the comfort of their own homes and communities for longer and prevent long hospital stays. We will introduce pharmacare in Ontario to make medications more accessible to people of all ages. With the help of sector leaders, we will improve primary care doctors' knowledge about arthritis to make early screening and diagnosis available to everyone.

Good afternoon,

Thank you for reaching out to me about this issue - I know it is an important consideration for so many in Ontario. I've included the answers to your questions below:
  • The ONDP is committed to making evidence based therapies available to Ontarians. We will increase access to community-based health care providers who can offer care close to home. We will improve funding to ODSP and home renovations grants to help people make their homes more accessible.
  • We will ensure the continuation of virtual care where appropriate. We will fix broadband issues in northern, rural, and remote areas to make virtual care more accessible. We will restore virtual care billing codes for doctors to offer their patients the option for a virtual appointment where appropriate.
  • Ontario NDP will lead the way and immediately introduce pharmacare in Ontario. We will work with sector leaders to establish fair prices and eliminate out-of-pocket costs for essential medicines.
  • We support Indigenous peoples in Canada to continue practicing traditional medicine. We will fund Indigenous primary care organizations and Aboriginal health access centres to develop culture- specific programs.
  • We will immediately increase funding to hospitals and investment $1 billion to clear the surgical and procedural backlog. We will increase hospital capacity by hiring more nurses and creating a healthcare workforce strategy. We will create a centralized surgical referral system to support patients to choose if they would like to stay with their current surgeon, choose a sooner appointment, or one closer to home.
I hope this helps to answer your questions. If you have any further, please feel free to reach out!

Warmly,

Kim McArthur-Jackson (she/her)
