Let your Minister of Health know that delayed research funding impacts patients

Canada’s health scientists are furious about a new reform from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research that impacts federal research funding

Canada’s health scientists are furious about a new reform from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) that impacts federal research funding and could threaten a patient’s health and access to healthcare.

In preparation for the reform, two earlier competitions were cancelled, creating an unprecedented demand for research funding. With 3,800 projects, only $275 million in science funding, and one untested system, biomedical researchers are warning about an “imminent crisis”.

In the old system, the review process consists of a face-to-face peer review session, where an expert panel reviews each application and assigns a score – a process used by almost all of the world’s scientific funding agencies. The new reform cancels the face-to-face peer review and moves everything to an anonymous online system.

The presidents of 15 of the top universities in Canada have already submitted their plea letters. Submit yours now. Write an open letter to the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, and tell her your concerns and why the CIHR should return to face-to-face expert panel reviews:
